It took Borodin almost five years to write his first symphony, and the composition of 'Symphony No. 2' was to take just as much time. One should not forget, however, that music was mainly a leisure activity for the professor of organic chemistry in St. Petersburg.
His work on 'Prince Igor' begun after the world premiere of Symphony No. 1 finished in favour of the second symphony, but part of the musical material found its way into the new composition, and even the extant programme testifies to the critical analysis of the music theatre: the gathering of Russian warriors in the first movement, the Old Slavonic bard in the andante, and the party scene to the sounds of the gusli in the finale.
보로딘이 첫 번째 교향곡을 작곡하는 데 거의 5년이 걸렸고, 두 번째 교향곡을 작곡하는 데에도 비슷한 시간이 소요되었습니다. 하지만 상트페테르부르크의 유기화학 교수였던 그에게 음악은 주로 여가 활동이었다는 점을 잊어서는 안 됩니다.
교향곡 1번의 세계 초연 이후 시작된 '이고르 왕자' 작업은 두 번째 교향곡에 집중하느라 마무리되지 못했지만, 그 음악적 소재 중 일부는 새로운 작품에 반영되었습니다. 현존하는 프로그램만 보더라도 그가 음악극에 대해 비판적으로 분석했음을 알 수 있습니다. 1악장의 러시아 전사들의 집결, 안단테의 고대 슬라브 음유시인, 그리고 마지막 악장의 구슬리 소리에 맞춰 펼쳐지는 연회 장면이 그 예입니다.
