In 1894 Johannes Brahms asked the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld to visit him during his beloved summer sojourn in Ischl, adding “It would be really wonderful if you brought your B flat clarinet with you, and if you were in no great hurry” – for the two Sonatas op. 120 were waiting to be rehearsed.

The first performances were given privately directly afterwards and the press enthusiastically reported: “The sonatas [...] are wonderful and will cause a great sensation”. Our edition of this work, today part of the clarinettist’s core repertoire, continues the revision of Brahms’s Duo Sonatas following the text in the new Brahms Complete Edition.

1894년 요하네스 브람스는 클라리넷 연주자 리하르트 뮐펠트에게 자신이 아끼던 여름 휴가지인 이슐에 방문해 달라고 부탁하며, "B♭ 클라리넷을 가져오시고, 너무 서두르지 않으시면 좋겠습니다."라고 덧붙였습니다. 브람스의 작품번호 120번 두 개의 소나타를 연습할 시간이 있었기 때문입니다.

초연은 그 직후 비공개로 진행되었고, 언론은 열광적으로 "이 소나타들은 훌륭하며 큰 반향을 일으킬 것이다."라고 보도했습니다. 오늘날 클라리넷 연주자의 핵심 레퍼토리 중 하나인 이 작품의 악보는 새로운 브람스 전집의 텍스트를 따라 브람스의 이중 소나타를 개정한 것입니다.
