Pachelbel composed his Canon and Gigue in D Major for 3 violins and continuo, or bass-and-chords accompaniment. The term “canon” signifies that all three violinists played the same part, starting at different times, just like a round. Pachelbel’s Canon is also a chaconne, which means it is built over a repeating chord progression.
