음반은 리스트의 후기 피아노 작품 7곡과 함께, 첼로와 피아노를 위한 실내악 5편을 함께 싣고 있다. 보통 1860년 이후로 구분되는 리스트의 후기작은 만년에 깊어진 신앙, 죽음에 대한 사색을 담고 있기 때문에 청장년기의 기교파 작품과는 색다른 분위기를 느낄 수 있다. 이머셀은 1886년산 에라르 피아노의 담백하고 숙성된 음향을 통해 진지하게 설득력 높은 연주를 들려준다. `밤`(3개의 장송 송가 중 2번)의 잘 짜인 내레이션, `완고한 차르다슈`의 논리 정연한 리듬과 후반부의 추진력, ‘바그너의 무덤가’의 슬픔을 초월한 추모의 정은 일품이다. 첼로를 위한 작품은 리스트의 예술 중 별미. 이스토민의 낭랑한 보잉이 들려주는 `음울한 곤돌라`의 실내악 버전은 가슴 저릿하다.
