This sonata was rewritten for violin and piano by the composer the following year at the suggestion of David Oistrakh, who heard the premiere of the Flute Sonata (Op. 94) in 1943.


This work has gained widespread popularity for its bright and clear concept, the polar opposite of


Prokofiev's "No. 1" (code number 337071), which he was working on around the same time. For this publication, violinist Megumi Ogata meticulously collated all four published scores, including the Anglo-Soviet edition, to produce the most meticulous edition currently available for both the violin and piano parts.

Each revision is clearly explained with explanatory notes. Fingering and bowing guides for the average performer are also included, ensuring a performance-friendly score. Hiroshi Yamaguchi's detailed commentary will be extremely useful for understanding the context of the work and Prokofiev's unique compositional style. All commentaries and annotations are provided in English.
