In 1955, while in the midst of working on a musical version of Voltaire's Candide with the distinguished American playwright Lillian Hellman, Leonard Bernstein composed French and Latin choruses as incidental music to the play The Lark adapted by Miss Hellman from the original French version by Jean Anouilh. Since the drama was about the trial of Joan of Arc, Bernstein’s music was deliberately evocative of the medieval era. In fact, the music was performed (on tape) by seven members of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua, a group specialising in pre-17th century music.


Robert Shaw attended one of the first performances and suggested to Leonard Bernstein that with some changes and additions the music would make an effective Missa Brevis. Thirty-three years later, in honour of Maestro Shaw's retirement as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Bernstein has followed his colleague's suggestions.


1955년, 저명한 미국 극작가 릴리언 헬먼과 함께 볼테르의 캉디드를 뮤지컬로 편곡하던 레너드 번스타인은 장 아누이의 원작 프랑스어 버전을 헬먼 양이 각색한 희곡 《종달새》에 부수적인 음악으로 프랑스어와 라틴어 합창곡을 작곡했습니다. 이 드라마는 잔 다르크의 재판을 소재로 했기에, 번스타인의 음악은 의도적으로 중세 시대를 떠올리게 했습니다. 실제로 이 음악은 17세기 이전 음악을 전문으로 하는 뉴욕 프로 무지카 안티콰의 멤버 7명이 (테이프로) 연주했습니다.


로버트 쇼는 초연 중 하나에 참석하여 레너드 번스타인에게 몇 가지 수정과 추가를 통해 효과적인 《미사 브레비스》를 만들 수 있을 것이라고 제안했습니다. 33년 후, 마에스트로 쇼가 애틀랜타 심포니 오케스트라 음악 감독직에서 은퇴한 것을 기념하여 번스타인은 동료의 제안을 따랐습니다.

작곡가 Bernstein, L(1918-1990)
