One can only regret that Beethoven left only four piano quartets, as these four works rank among the most popular of this genre. Three of them, the Quartets WoO 36, had been penned in Bonn, which makes them one of the master's most successful juvenilia of all. Yet even if they exhale Mozart's spirit, they are already and unmistakably typical Beethoven. Further evidence of his regard for the pieces can be found in his re-use of the third quartet's slow movement in his first Piano Sonata op. 2 no. 1. The fourth quartet represents another version of the Wind Quintet op. 16.


베토벤이 피아노 사중주를 단 네 곡밖에 남기지 않았다는 사실은 아쉬운 부분입니다. 이 네 작품은 이 장르에서 가장 인기 있는 작품들로 손꼽히기 때문입니다. 그중 세 곡, 즉 사중주 20번부터 36번까지는 본에서 작곡되었는데, 이는 베토벤의 초기 작품 중에서도 가장 성공적인 작품으로 평가받는다는 것을 의미합니다. 비록 모차르트의 영향을 받았을지라도, 이 작품들은 이미 베토벤 특유의 색깔을 뚜렷하게 보여주고 있습니다. 베토벤이 이 작품들을 얼마나 아꼈는지는 세 번째 사중주의 느린 악장을 그의 피아노 소나타 2번 1번에서 재사용했다는 사실에서도 알 수 있습니다. 네 번째 사중주는 관현악 5중주 16번의 또 다른 버전이라고 할 수 있습니다.
