Only very few piano works have become as popular as this theme with twelve variations. It already caught on soon after Mozart’s death, as witnessed by the numerous handwritten copies and prints. Although nothing is known with any certainty regarding its genesis, we can now conclusively date “Ah, vous dirai-je Maman” to 1781. At that time Mozart wanted to make his way as a prominent piano teacher in Vienna. His variations still prove to be excellent teaching material. Our edition has been completely revised and also offers an extremely informative preface by the Mozart specialist Ulrich Konrad. A facsimile of Mozart’s manuscript is also published by Henle (HN 3213).
이 주제와 12개의 변주로 구성된 작품만큼 큰 인기를 누린 피아노 곡은 드뭅니다. 수많은 필사본과 인쇄본이 남아 있는 것에서 알 수 있듯이, 이 곡은 모차르트 사후 얼마 지나지 않아 이미 널리 사랑받았습니다. 작곡 경위에 대해서는 확실히 알려진 바가 없으나, 오늘날에는 '아, 어머니께 말씀드리죠(Ah, vous dirai-je Maman)' 변주곡의 작곡 시기를 1781년으로 확정할 수 있게 되었습니다. 당시 모차르트는 빈에서 저명한 피아노 교사로서 입지를 다지고자 했습니다. 이 변주곡은 오늘날에도 여전히 훌륭한 교육용 레퍼토리로 평가받고 있습니다. 본 에디션은 내용을 전면 개정하였으며, 모차르트 전문가 울리히 콘라트가 집필한 유익한 서문을 수록하고 있습니다. 모차르트 자필 악보의 팩시밀리(복제본) 또한 헨레(Henle) 출판사에서 별도로 출간되었습니다(HN 3213).
