The edition does justice to the principle of source criticism for performance practice. In addition to an evaluation of the sources and metronome markings, Hauschild questions the dynamic markings, notated negligently by Beethoven and his copyists.

Piano Vocal Score of the Finale with the 'Ode to Joy' by Carl Reinecke Der Erstdruck des Capriccios erschien erstmals 1889 posthum bei Ricordi in Mailand. Der Notentext weist dabei starke Eingriffe auf die wohl auf Confalonieri zuruckzufuhren sind. Das Manuskript des Werks wird im Verlagsarchiv (Archivio Musicale Casa Ricordi) aufbewahrt. Die vorliegende MUSICA RARA-Ausgabe geht erstmals auf diese Handschrift zuruck. The first edition of the Capriccio was published posthumously in 1889 by Ricordi in Milan. The musical text presents substantial interventions that no doubt go back to Confalonieri. The manuscript of the work is located in the publisher's archives (Archivio Musicale Casa Ricordi). The present MUSICA RARA edition is the first to be based on this manuscript.
