Within a few months in the autumn and winter of 1789, Mozart penned more than 650 pages of a score that shows almost no trace of mental or physical exertion. The result was one of his most profound operas “Così fan tutte”, which has held listeners spellbound with its blend of bitterness and comedy to the present day. This study score is based on the corresponding New Mozart Edition volume, edited by Faye Ferguson and Wolfgang Rehm, that contains a critically-edited full score as well as alternative versions of individual fragments and arias resulting from a thorough examination of the sources. It also includes a facsimile and the transcription of a canon in A-flat major, found on the back of a draft sheet, which provides an insight into Mozart's multifaceted working process on this opera.
