Tchaikovsky Nocturne, Op.19, No.4 for Cello and Piano

Tchaikovsky’s

Nocturne, Op. 19, No. 4

For Cello and Piano

(JEFFREY SOLOW)

PREFACE

Tchaikovsky composed four works for solo cello and orchestra. All cellists are familiar with the Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33, and the Pezzo Capriccioso, Op. 62, which were originally written for the cello; however, they may not be aware of the Andante Cantabile for cello and strings or the Nocturne, Op.19, No. 4 for cello and full orchestra. These two lesser-known pieces were transcribed for cello and piano by Wilhelm Fitzenhagen (1848-1890)-the cellist who premiered the Rococo Variations in 1877-and then later orchestrated by Tchaikovsky.

The Nocturne began life in 1873 as the fourth in a set of six Morceaux for solo piano, Op. 19. Arranging the Nocturne for cello and piano, Fitzenhagen raised it a semi-tone to D minor, a more comfortable key for the cello. He also added a short cadenza and changed many articulations and dynamics. Tchaikovsky, in turn, legitimized Fitzenhagen`s transcription by setting it for cello and full orchestra sometime between 1886 and 1888, around the same time he composed the Pezzo Capriccioso.

In the present edition, the separate cello part contains my performance suggestions for bowings, fingerings, and some dynamics (given in parentheses). Since there is no easy way to indicate whether finger extensions or shifts are appropriate, players will have to use their own judgment. The markings in the piano score are based on several, often conflicting sources: Fitzenhagen`s edition for cello and piano, the original version for solo piano, and Tchaikovsky`s orchestral score in the Russian edition of his complete works.
